The City of Chilliwack is working to put up some form of traffic control at a dangerous intersection close to the new Canada Education Park campus.
The intersection where Keith Wilson and Tyson roads meet has become increasingly busy since the opening of the new campus, and has been the site of two vehicle collisions within the last two weeks.
UFV instructor John Carroll teaches at the CEP campus. Any upgrade to that particular intersection, he says, would make getting there a whole lot easier.
“Considering the number of vehicles going through there now,” Carroll said, ”and the growing enrollment at CEP expected in the next few years, it doesn’t seem like the present routes can adequately accommodate the traffic.”
Mayor Sharon Gaetz stated in a Facebook post that the city is considering two different methods: a conventional traffic light or a roundabout. In the meantime, the intersection has been turned into a four-way stop.
The Chilliwack Progress reports that the overall estimated cost of the project, according to city staff, would come to just over $1 million if a single lane roundabout is constructed, as opposed to the conventional traffic light, which would cost about $300,000.
