Coming full circle

Having memorized the ways in and out of the city on game days, I parked in my usual underground parking lot and made my way to Terry Fox Plaza — only to turn around to use the one entrance I have never used before. The infamous plaza in front of BC Place stadium, and the BC Lions pre-game festivities it hosts, have been a part of my life as far back as I can remember. From devastating losses to glorious championships, I have experienced every emotion sports can elicit as one of the 60,000 roaring fans that can squeeze into BC Place. Being part of the magic of football in the stadium that is part of my identity has been my aspiration ever since I spoke my first word: tackle.

Today was different. Today I had to use the fabled media entrance, because I finally got to live my dream. Today, I was a member of the BC Lions press corps.

There were exorbitant security protocols to get the badge that accessed the field and a perfect seat to watch the intricacies of each play. I witnessed the players warm up, saw the stadium filled with fans, asked the professionals questions post-game, and finally sat in front of my computer, furiously typing alongside other press as the sounds of a pressure washer reset the field for the next game. Follow your dreams, kids.
