Federal budget announced, with ramifications for students

Following their advocacy efforts in Ottawa last month, Student Union Society (SUS), along with the Canadian Alliance of Student Associations (CASA), is highlighting features of the 2016 federal budget. The budget includes a 50 per cent increase to student grant amounts for low to middle income families and part-time students, a $25,000 increase to the Repayment Assistance Plan, as well as a $8.4 billion investment for Indigenous peoples. Although it was a Liberal platform promise, the budget did not see the removal of the two per cent cap on the Post-Secondary Student Support Program for First Nations students, or further investments for graduate students.

 

City of Abbotsford seeking funds for potential highway overpass near UFV

Abbotsford’s city council has decided to improve pedestrian and bike infrastructures in the city, and is asking the provincial government for their help. The funding will help the city build a $5.75 million pedestrian / cycling overpass on Salton Road, which will cross over Highway 1, as well as a pedestrian / bike light at Valley Road and Highway 11. The funding was requested as part of the $6 million that the province is donating to communities as part of their BikesBC program.

UFV business students win bronze medal

A team of finance students from UFV’s school of business have won a bronze medal at the CFA institute students research challenge on March 11. The team competed in the local division against graduate teams from UVic and SFU, as well as undergraduate teams from UBC and Kwantlen. The international event saw over 4,000 students participate from 865 different universities.
