Varsity Writer Job Summary:

The varsity reporter is responsible for writing at least two UFV varsity sports articles per week during the regular season as assigned by the sports editor. During the off-season, the varsity reporter is responsible for writing one varsity sports article and one other article for The Cascade. Because reporters are paid members of the Cascade staff, they are expected to write more comprehensive articles than a contributor.

At all times, staff writers must adhere to the policies and procedures of the Cascade Journalism Society and Canadian University Press Code of Ethics, and always behave in an ethical manner as a representative of the paper.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Attend writers’ meetings and take assignments as needed.

2. Contribute a minimum of two full-length varsity articles per issue during the regular season and a minimum of one full-length varsity article plus one full-length article for any section of The Cascade during the off-season.

3. Must be able to write copy to deadline, complete copy in a timely manner, and be available to cover varsity home matches and news as assigned by the sports editor.

4. Attend workshops and team building events as required.

5. Perform other job-related duties as required by the Managing Editor and/or Editor-in-Chief.

6. Take photos of campus events as required.

7. Work a minimum of two in-office hours per week as scheduled by the Managing Editor.

8. Report directly to the Sports Editor.

Qualifications:

1. Must be registered in the equivalent of at least one for-credit course at UFV during the fall and winter semesters.

2. Must be available to work varying hours.

3. Must be able to deal effectively with Cascade Journalism Society and university staff, especially the UFV athletics department, students, and the general public.

4. Must demonstrate strong command of the English language through writing ability.

5. Must not be an active member of any UFV varsity team about which he or she is reporting.

6. If writer joins a varsity team, The Cascade reserves the right to dissolve or renegotiate contract.

All interested applicants must submit the following: a resume, a cover letter, and a sample of written work, ideally an example of reporting. The deadline for applications is July 22. Applications and questions can be sent to Managing Editor Mitch Huttema (mitch@ufvcascade.ca)
