In the past week, UFV students continued to make Chilliwack proud in their accomplishments in academics, sports, humanitarian work, and the visual arts. Here’s what’s new at UFV’s Chilliwack Campus:

First-year general studies major and Chilliwack resident Sarah Wierks was named UFV Cascades Athlete of the Week, an award presented by the Abbotsford Heat. This basketball superstar scored 12 points, took ten rebounds, and two steals in our University’s first Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) championship game against the University of Toronto Blues.

The visual arts diploma graduate show is on display at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre all month long. The exhibit, open Wednesday through Saturday, noon to 5 p.m., is free to the public. Entitled “Look No Hands,” this year’s gallery features sculpture, photography, multimedia, acrylic painting, and graffiti art. With their expressive and thought-provoking works, students Karen Davis, Amber Key, Erika Lehner, Alex Stewart, Caitlyn Jensen, Dean Lewthwaite, and Michelle Stubbe make every effort to engage the viewer.

Ashley Brown, Miss Universe Canada contestant and second-year political science student, dropped the ceremonial puck and signed autographs on Saturday, March 19 at the final regular season game of the Chilliwack Bruins. Ashley, a Chilliwack resident, will be competing with 63 other individuals across the country in June. If she wins, she will have the opportunity to work with Donald Trump and be an ambassador for the United Nations, a significant boost to her career. Ashley’s heart is set on working for a nongovernmental agency that cares for women and children. She has done mission work in Australia and Vanuatu, and participated in a London conference on achieving conflict mediation in war-torn countries.

Following a spectacular Rags to Radio show earlier this month, the UFV Student Union Society presents independent rock band This is Franco on Wednesday, March 30 at Corky’s Irish Pub in downtown Chilliwack. The group is hosting a CD release party next month in Vancouver; they cite Eric Clapton, Counting Crows, Dashboard Confessional, and the Beatles as the artists they have been most influenced by.

The annual Canadian Cancer Society Daffodil Campaign begins next month; however, UFV International and Student Life have teamed up to bring you live daffodils and the popular lapel pins early. On March 30, 31 and April 1, student volunteers will be selling these bundles of hope at Alumni Hall in Abbotsford and at Chilliwack Campus Centre. Don’t forget to stop by UFV’s Daffodil Campaign kick-off – Raising Courage – in Chilliwack on Tuesday, March 29 at 11 a.m. There will be popcorn and punch, an opportunity to meet Choosing to Smile authors Glenda Standeven and Michelle Rickaby, and a banner project that asks “What would you say to cancer?”

Local Suttton group realtor Larry Neilsen will be hosting a new program – called Plugged into Chilliwack – meant to better connect Chilliwack to the online world. It kicks off April 12th at downtown Chilliwack’s Mill Street Openhouse with an informal workshop led by Vancouver social media guru Owen Clark, called “How to Manage Your Social Media in 30 Minutes a Day (or Less).” The workshop will cover Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, and Meetup. If you have been living in a cave the past two years, you are invited to visit www.meetup.com/plugged-into-chilliwack to RSVP for this relaxed learning and networking event.
