ObjectivesThis presentation will summarize and expand on content framed in two books that shook up the therapeutic beliefs developed by this typically-optimistic presenter over her 20 years as a Cognitive-Behavioral Psychologist (The Antidote: Happiness for People who Can’t Stand Positive Thinking by Oliver Burkeman; The Happiness Trap: How to Stop Struggling and Start Living by Russ Harris).
• To briefly wax philosophic on humanity’s search for meaning, “happiness”, connection, goal- achievement, clear mind, etc.
• To introduce examples (based on research and real-life clinical experience) of when positive thinking actually has an opposite effect.
• To explore alternative options to toxic positivity: embracing uncertainty, finding comfort in vulnerability and common humanity, practicing non-attachment, mindful/non-judgmental meditation, other Acceptance and Commitment Therapy-based techniques and principles.
• To share recommendations for vetted resources and additional exploration of mindfulness, Stoicism, and other approaches to a contented life.
