Netflix’s Lucifer comes back for final season

This article was published on June 2, 2021 and may be out of date. To maintain our historical record, The Cascade does not update or remove outdated articles.

The Netflix show Lucifer, starring Tom Ellis, made its debut in 2016. Ellis portrays the character of Lucifer, the Devil himself. The show revolves around how different Lucifer’s life is after he resigns from his position as the ruler of Hell and comes to experience life in the human world. But unlike our typical mental image of the Devil, Lucifer Morningstar is genuinely a good person, very handsome, and charming. When the fallen angel lands on Earth, he goes straight to Los Angeles, the city of angels.

The show begins with the murder of one of Lucifer’s past acquaintances. The Devil gets deeply saddened by the loss of his old friend and decides that he wants to find out who did it and make them pay. But his attempts to take the law into his own hands fail miserably when he runs into Detective Chloe Decker. Played by Lauren German, Chloe Decker is a homicide detective for the Los Angeles Police Department. She solves the murder mystery of the death of Lucifer’s friend, along with the help of Lucifer. While the detective is only doing her job, the Devil realizes how interesting it is to solve crimes. So, he charms his way into being appointed as a Civilian Consultant to LAPD and becoming partners with Detective Decker. But as Lucifer is trying to convince Chloe that he is the Devil, the ruler of Hell, he finds out new things about himself. Every time the all-powerful and immortal archangel is around Chloe, he is very vulnerable and becomes mortal. She, quite literally, is his only weakness.

Throughout the seasons, the chemistry between Lucifer and Chloe grows more and more as they solve various gruesome crimes and face many different problems together. The Devil has many enemies and is always in constant danger. Sometimes it’s one of his angelic siblings trying to kill him, and at other times, ancient biblical creatures (like Cain, the first human to take another human life) show up to seek revenge. But as hated as Lucifer is amongst some people, he is loved by many more. Throughout all the dangerous situations, he always has his brother, archangel Amenadiel; his best friend, Mazikeen; and Chloe by his side. Together, they all overcome many dangerous situations.

The show is a huge success as its concept is very unique. It is a very interesting portrayal of the Devil as being charming and a true gentleman, despite the popular belief of him being evil. The show is a perfect combination of action, romance, comedy, and suspense. The constant entry of new characters and twists keeps the audience at the edge of their seats at all times, and it’s surprising how many biblical references are made throughout the show. The show really emphasizes the concept of Hell and Heaven and gives the audience a whole new perspective about the Devil. Ellis fits perfectly in his role, and if the actual Devil is anything like him, I would definitely not mind a little dance with the Devil.

The only thing that would have made the series better is if there was more focus on the development of Lucifer and Chloe’s relationship. I would have also loved to find out more about Lucifer’s life in Hell and in Heaven before he was banished to Hell, how things work in Heaven, and why Lucifer was chosen by God to be the ruler of Hell. The fifth season is being released in two parts, and the first is already available. It begins with Lucifer’s evil twin, Michael, coming down to Earth and endangering the lives of everyone

Lucifer cares about. Realizing how dangerous it is for him to be around, Lucifer decides to come back to Earth to stop him. Michael somehow convinces Lucifer’s best friend, Mazikeen, to betray Lucifer and work for him instead. Sickened by Michael’s trickery and evilness, Lucifer, Amenadiel, Michael, and Mazikeen all break out into a huge fight. But seeing all his children ready to kill each other, God becomes very infuriated and decides to come down to Earth to stop the fight himself. And with that big cliffhanger, the first part of the season comes to an end.

I’m personally very excited to see the portrayal of God in the final season, and to see if his visit will be a pleasant one or not. But most importantly, I’m very excited to find out if Lucifer and Chloe end up together. And if they do, will they stay on Earth or move down to Hell to be its rulers? So many questions that still need answers and so many open ends remaining. I cannot wait to see what happens next in the second part of season 5. Season 5B of Lucifer arrives on Netflix on May 28.
