UFV Athletics has had to make some big changes due to COVID-19

UFV Athletics has been faced with some difficult decisions this semester, but so far, they have been able to get some teams competing and in general have stayed afloat. Steve Tuckwood, UFV’s athletic director, has been a huge part of that. He answered some questions regarding the Cascades’ current situation.

What were some of the most difficult challenges this fall for you regarding the decision by Canada West?

Having to cancel the seasons was very hard, as it really affects so much of what varsity does. Our student-athletes really thrive on competition, and to take it away for the year was the right decision, but not an easy one.

How did the soccer program decide to compete this fall, and what else do you know about other sports attempting to play this fall?

Our coach talked to his colleagues at other schools, and we decided collectively that this was the most solid approach for our teams. So far it has gone well.

Is the program hopeful for third-term sports, or is the general idea that they will play out of conference too? What can Cascades supporters look forward to?

Third term is challenging, as it would require athletes to be fully registered to compete, and it is traditionally not a term where that happens. But, anything and everything is on the table. All of the B.C. schools are talking about what the winter and next year could look like. Luckily, some of our best competition is in our province, so I would suspect any games would be in B.C. before we would look to other provinces.

How have the new hires/coaches adapted to this season? How has the staff handled the changes?

All of the staff has been great. We pivoted to be able to provide access to Building E by redeploying some people to similar, but not the exact same positions. The response has been very positive despite the disappointment. Being able to provide something was huge for morale, even if it was not our normal delivery.

Has this been your most difficult challenge as the director of athletics and campus recreation? If so, how does it compare to other challenges you’ve faced?

This one has been the most difficult, as the main factors are beyond our control. I think this has prepared all of us to accept that we can only do our part and hope that others do the same so we can all get back our “new” normal as soon as possible.
