New domestic and international talents join the Cascades’ golf teams
Although many of the sports in the Canada West conference are not returning this semester, golf seems to be the exception. Due to the ease of social distancing while golfing, the league has decided that the sport will return in October.
While the Cascades have not been able to compete in any competitions recently, the organization has been busy acquiring new talent for the athletic department. Over the summer, the Cascades have added a mix of international and domestic students to the men’s and women’s golf teams.
In this upcoming season, Lucy Park, Alex Brunner, and Avery Biggar will compete as members of the Cascades’ women’s golf team. Over the past few years, each of the new members has obtained an impressive golf résumé. Since Park moved to the Lower Mainland from South Korea, she has won the BCGA girls tournament, and been the runner-up in several local competitions.
Likewise, Biggar has spent the last few years competing locally. Although she joined the Cascades last spring, this will be her first time competing in a UFV uniform. Brunner, the only woman golfer added to the team from outside of the Lower Mainland, has spent the past few years making a name for herself as an accomplished golfer from the Okanagan. In her time living in Osoyoos, she won the championship of the Osoyoos Golf Club three times in the last four years.
The UFV men’s golf team has also added three members this year: Scott Rohlinger, Jackson Jacob, and Eli Greene. Rohlinger and Jacob, after seasons at Bellevue College and the University of Idaho, respectively, will be competing north of the border in the 2020-21 season. While this move for Rohlinger means moving to a new country to continue his golf career, for Jacob, coming to UFV means he will be closer to his hometown, Langley.
Greene is the only newly acquired team member who has not competed at the university level. Although this will be his first year in a college uniform, Greene has faced off in some challenging tournaments, like the 2018 Aaron Baddeley International Junior Championship in San Diego.
