With the decision for 2021 second-term sports coming in less than two weeks, Canada West decided to cancel their golf championships
Canada West has announced the cancellation of this year’s golf championships due to COVID-19. The championship event was set to commence Oct. 2, just before Canada West’s scheduled decision for two-term sports on Oct. 8. The news signals potential cancellations of further events, as travel restrictions were cited as the reason for the championship’s cancelation. With the number of COVID-19 cases rising in B.C. at the time of the decision, there could be some pressure to cancel the season for second-term sports, as at least one team already has. The University of Alberta has decided that their basketball, volleyball, and hockey teams will not play the 2020-21 season, and they did so as far back as June of this year.
While in-person sports are suffering due to COVID-19, there could be hope for esports. The FISU World University Championships declared that all of their events would be cancelled for 2020. However, FISU esports events continue. Canada won its first match in FISU esports this year, as Windor’s Sudiksha Khanduja was victorious at FIFA 20 for the PlayStation 4.
UFV has managed to keep athletics afloat during the pandemic, and some sports have started to gear up for a potential season. UFV Volleyball posted a picture to their Cascades social media with the Canada West logo, as they are potentially setting up to debut in the conference for 2021. The season would mark the first year that all varsity sports at UFV are competing in U Sports.
