On his qualifications for the position
“I bring background working in the educational sphere. I did that for two years…. I’ve worked with individuals with disabilities at various times. I’m a seven year veteran of this institution. I’ve got a good working relationship with many of the faculty and staff here.”
On accessibility issues at UFV
“We had to move this entire meeting because I could not get to the speaking area. That’s, to me, unacceptable. This is a public university in 2012. This isn’t the ’70s…. It would be really good for whoever helps put this building up for the student union that they consider accessibility as a design concept not merely an afterthought. … I notice every single detail of this campus. … There are a lot of things I want to see done better: classroom layouts, doorway berths, there are way more than a few physical barriers.”
On advocacy and student representation
“I don’t have a background in politics, but I’ve advocated, I have a good voice, I have opinions and I stand up for what I believe in. I feel that this role is not so much about politics as I’m here for the students. You are the reason that I’m here. I am a voice for those people that may not be able to voice for themselves if you don’t know how. I also have two ears, so I’m also a good listener for your concerns, bring them to me and I can advocate on your behalf to this student organization. And that’s the bottom line.”
Concluding remarks
“My experience, my diversity of experiences in life, my can-do attitude, knowledge of the university, time spent here make me a great candidate for this position. The fact that I have a voice and I’m not afraid to use it makes me a strong leader for the student body. That’s why you should vote for me.”
