On a calm and cloudy Saturday, the UFV Cascades Men’s Soccer team faced the University of Victoria Vikes. The boys in white came into the game with an unfortunate record of 1-5, while the Vikes sported a record of 3-2-1. The game got off to a terrific start with both teams having chances to score, and continued to go back and forth throughout the rest of the match. Cascades goalkeeper Jacob Kubanski made some amazing saves in the first half that kept UVIC from scoring, along with the assistance of defensemen Ryan Liddiard and Sahib Phagura, who both played a phenomenal game as well. Head Coach Alan Errington commented on the play of Phagura: “Young Sahib Phagura, as a rookie, has really set the tone for the rest of the team.”

After 45 minutes of play, the score was 0-0. In the second half, forward Sasa Plavsic took charge, displaying some great skill, dribbling through the Victoria defense and creating some scoring chances. “What we are trying to preach to them is to pass the ball a bit moreand have more control with it,” said Errington.

Despite the intensity of the match, both teams failed to put a ball in the back of the net and the game ended in a scoreless draw.

However, Coach Errington said that he was satisfied with the way his team played. “I thought it was a fair game and a tie was very appropriate. It’s a step in the right direction and if we can give no goals away, that’s still a positive.”

The next home match will be on Oct.15th at 2:15pm against the UBC Thunderbirds at Bateman Park.
