The Cascade is taking a big step forward as an independent, autonomous alternative news source for UFV and the Fraser Valley. Beginning in 2023, We will be offering financial compensation for published articles contributed by current UFV students.
To the best of our knowledge, The Cascade will be the first student newspaper in Canada to fully compensate our writers. We believe that relying on unpaid labour is unethical, and provides an unnecessary barrier to potential writers who aren’t in a position to donate their time. While we believe that the experience, mentorship, and opportunity to have work published is valuable, we also acknowledge that for busy students, that isn’t always enough.
We’re excited to offer a more equitable opportunity, and hope that it leads to a greater range of writers becoming involved in The Cascade!
Going forward, contributors will be paid at a rate of $20 per article for work meeting these requirements:
- Only current UFV students are eligible for payment. Alumni are still welcome to contribute, however!
- Contributors are limited to two paid submissions per issue of The Cascade, for a total of $40.
- Only full-length articles are eligible for payment. Shorter-form writing, such as Snapshots or contributions to collaborative articles, are still voluntary.
- As always, The Cascade has sole discretion of what is and is not published, and there will be no payment for articles that are not published, regardless of reason.
- Contributors must sign and abide by The Cascade’s contributor contract
The Cascade’s executive team is thrilled to bring in this change, and we’re excited to support our current contributors and meet many new ones in the future!
