What kind of background knowledge do you have of Senate?
On the UFV website there’s a thing I downloaded and it explained all of the Senate rules and responsibilities. Like we have to meet at the scheduled times and to keep myself up on the issues that I’m representing and that we have to vote on. Importantly, I bring the perspective of students, but I don’t actually directly vote. I’m supposed to vote in the best interest of the university.
Have you looked over the minutes from meetings during the past year or seen the types of things that come forward for Senate decisions.
I actually haven’t. I was thinking more about current issues. I actually haven’t looked at them. I didn’t know they were actually available.
Yeah, the minutes are online.
Okay, I never saw them there.
What students do you feel you’ll be representative of on Senate? I know the roles calls for representing all students, but what students are you most representative of?
Probably the best people I’d represent is probably fellow Bachelor of Science students.
How then do you plan to communicate with students, whether it’s Bachelor of Science students or students in general?
Well my thought is to try to find a way to communicate to everybody that I’m quite open to suggestions, I have my email address. If there’s a major concern that you have that you’d like UFV’s government to look over, just email it to me and I’ll bring it up. I’ll research it myself and bring it up during a meeting if that’s appropriate. I’d like to have a suggestion box or something like that, so if anyone has a certain thing they can send it to me. Just so that everybody knows that the leaders of UFV are listening to their concerns.
And for a suggestion box, would you set that up online? How would you do that?
I imagine I could put posters everywhere saying if you have a concern, email, I have my student UFV address, or maybe get an official email address for it.
You mentioned you were interested in current issues. Was there anything you’re particularly interested in?
Well I am supportive of the “Save the Writing Centre” movement. I think that changing the Writing Centre as they are is a detriment to the university.
