UFV Speaks: Should tuition be lowered?

This article was published on April 7, 2021 and may be out of date. To maintain our historical record, The Cascade does not update or remove outdated articles.

In UFV Speaks, our intrepid reporters pick a topic currently relevant to UFV students or staff and ask them for their heated opinions to get a real sense of how the UFV population feels about the facts.

I asked a few students in person and over the phone who are currently attending UFV for their thoughts and opinions on if tuition should have been lowered this past year considering most classes were taught online.

Krysia Primus, BFA in visual arts and graphic design

“I’m not totally sure how I feel about that because I’ve had mixed experiences with my classes. For some of my classes, I feel as though they are more suited to being online, so in that case it is equivalent and it should be the same price. Lots of universities teach online classes, and they are the same prices as in-person classes. I guess my answer is it depends on the class.”

Isaak Neumann, criminal justice major

“Yeah, I do think tuition should have been lowered. I didn’t really talk to any of my teachers throughout these last four months I have been doing school, so I have just been all on my own. I’ll send them an email, and they’ll respond three days later, which doesn’t help me or benefit me in any way. All six of the classes I have taken, I have only had to do a group call once.”

Joel Vanderpol, graphic design major

“Yes, I do think tuition should have been lowered. I think overall tuition is priced fairly, but because it was all online, we didn’t get the full experience. I feel as though since it was the same price, it was a bit of a scam. Kids should be properly compensated for it, especially graphic design because we get charged a lot.”

Camille Candia, graphic design major

“Between me and my partner, we had three classes that ran without a meeting time or lecture, which felt like it was just doing assignments and not learning. We also have additional materials fees on top of tuition for our program, which we were unable to use for the majority of the time. I do think there should have been an adjustment to tuition, especially since it’s about $800 for one of my courses. The educational quality supplied by the professors in all my classes since switching to online was not adequate.”
