Coast Capital Savings has continued its support of the UFV Coast Capital Peer Resource and Leadership Centre (PRLC) with a donation of $50,000. The donation will help the centre with its ongoing work providing holistic support to students with peer-to-peer guidance and mentorship, and helping students find resources around UFV.
Joanne MacLean, UFV president and vice chancellor, said the continued support allows UFV to implement student support and referral services.
“UFV is very pleased to continue offering new ways of supporting student success,” said MacLean. “It is well-documented that peer-to-peer engagement helps students learn and further develop their skills.”
In addition to providing students with mentoring and leadership services, the PRLC hosts and supports a variety of events and initiatives. In 2016/17, the centre hosted LGBTQ awareness training, sponsored a booth at Fraser Valley Pride, and brought guest speaker Benjamin O’Keefe to speak at the President’s Leadership Lecture series. This last academic year, the centre helped introduce a sexualized violence prevention program, coordinated the distribution of naloxone kits on campus, and offered “Wellness Wednesdays” and visits from Mac the support dog.
Over the next academic year, the PRLC plans to expand its services to the Chilliwack campus, explore food insecurity solutions for students, and offer sex-positive programming as well as specialized support for trans students.
Coast Capital Savings has donated over $425,000 towards UFV mentorship and leadership initiatives since 2008.
