Not Disney’s Love
By Marlena Ashton

My love’s not a delicate glass slipper.

Nor the “happily ever after” found
at a fairy tale’s end where the princess
is saved by a knight in shining armour.

It’s not the magic kiss from a slimy
frog prince, or a song we sing in perfect
harmony without practicing even
a single word. My love is not written
in the stars or the colours of the wind.

It’s not any of these fantasy dreams.

It is a friendly, calming cup of tea;
a home-cooked meal in your belly; a close
embrace welcoming you back home; a warm,
cozy fire on a cold winter’s night.
