On Tuesday, Sept. 22 at the 81 United Nations (UN) General assembly held in New York City, Prime Minister Mark Carney pledged to give $100 million CAD to help Palestine in an attempt to ensure “a durable peace for Israelis and Palestinians.”
In his speech, Carney explained that of this money, $80 million is being allotted for humanitarian assistance. Carney went on to announce that the remaining $20 million would go to supporting “peace and security capacity building,” which included training police in the West Bank.
This is following Canada’s trade restrictions on goods produced in unlawful Israeli settlements, which was announced in the British Parliament on Sept. 8 of this year. These sanctions are being implemented among several countries including France and the United Kingdom (UK).
These trade restrictions come nearly a year after the Government of Canada officially recognized Palestine as a sovereign state on Sept. 21, 2025.
The Cascade will continue to report updates as events unfold.
