The News Editor is responsible for assigning, collecting, and editing the content of the News section in The Cascade. The News Editor shall ensure that issues relevant to students are presented in the section, including but not limited to the Student Union Society, campus news, and community coverage.
The News Editor is responsible for leading the operations of the News section, which includes ensuring that staff and volunteers have the resources and abilities to produce good news copy. The News Editor also assists the Editor-in-Chief and Managing Editor with planning, administration, and human resources management should circumstances warrant.
At all times, the News Editor must adhere to the Cascade Journalism Society bylaws, Code of Conduct, and other policies; shall ensure that all material does not violate the Canadian University Press Code of Ethics; and always behave in an ethical manner as a representative of the paper.
Responsibilities
- Ensure that matters of interest to UFV students are covered in the News section
- Assign, collect, and edit articles for the News section
- Edit articles for libel and check for cases of potential plagiarism
- Request and select appropriate images for the News section in consultation with the Production Manager, Production Assistants, Illustrator, and Editor-in-Chief
- Ensure the News section is organized and has sufficient quality content for each issue
- Ensure, in conjunction with the EIC and Managing Editor, that the tasks of any absent editor are completed
- In the case of the absence from or vacancy of the office of the Editor-in-Chief, assist the Managing Editor in both her or his regular and acting-EIC responsibilities
- Work one-on-one with staff and contributors to ensure quality and development of news writing and related skills
- Maintain the News Editor training manual to ensure contacts, issues, etc. are shared with successors
- Maintain a social media presence on the @CascadeNews Twitter account.
- Write a minimum of two full news articles per issue, as well as news briefs
- Along with the Editor-in-Chief and Managing Editor, generate or solicit story ideas to be covered in the features section
- Must work five hours per week in the Cascade office
- Must attend all writers’ meetings and Editorial Board meetings
- Must perform other duties as required by the Editor-in-Chief and/or Managing Editor
Qualifications
- Must be registered in at least one course for credit during the fall and winter semesters
- Must be available to work varying hours
- Must demonstrate strong command of the English language. An editing test will be administered during the interview process
- Must have knowledge of all relevant laws and journalistic standards concerning libel
- Must be able to deal effectively with university staff, students, and the general public
