Having grown up reading Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments (2007-2014) series, you can imagine my excitement when it was adapted into the Netflix television show, Shadowhunters(2016-2019). After three seasons of heartwarming moments, angsty confessions, and easily my favourite fictional relationship of all time, the show was cancelled due to financial issues — thus breaking my devoted teenage heart. At least I can always rewatch it, right?
Wrong. On Jan. 1, 2026, Shadowhunters was removed from Netflix. That’s right, the show has been scrubbed from streaming platforms — unless you want to spend almost $100 to buy it on YouTube. As if the cancellation wasn’t bad enough, now they’re just pouring salt on the wound.
What’s worse is it’s not the only one. Some Netflix originals like Taylor Swift: Reputation Stadium Tour (2018) have already been erased from the streaming site, with others like She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (2018-2020) apparently set to follow in Shadowhunters’ footsteps this February. Insane behaviour if you ask me. Netflix originals should have a permanent home on the streaming site. Now, if you’ll excuse me, my teenage self has to find $100 somehow…
