The UFV varsity sports season is winding down, and it’s time to acknowledge those who have played their last game in the green-and-white, scored their last points, and dug their last hit. Over the coming weeks, The Cascade will be interviewing each of these individuals, recognizing them both for their character as leaders and their skill as players. These men and women are the “legends” of UFV Sports.
Kim Mintenko – Setter (Women’s Volleyball)
How long have you played for the UFV women’s volleyball team?
Five years
How have you seen the team grow or improve during your time as a part of it?
As the years have gone by the team has gone through many transitions and my role has shifted from learning to leading. This year I have seen the most change with so many new faces being added to the program. The future is bright for the remaining girls with their talent and competitive attitudes.
What has been your favorite memory as part of the team?
I have enjoyed countless games, road trips, and events with the volleyball teams of UFV. I think the most memorable affair was just getting to know the men’s and women’s team in my first year because those people were and continue to be some of my best friends today.
What has, in your opinion, been the team’s biggest accomplishment during your time at UFV?
Achieving the bronze medal finish in my 3rd year was a great accomplishment for the very new program of UFV.
What is it that has kept you playing volleyball through your university career? What do you love about it?
Love of the game, the team, and competition. It seemed a natural decision to be a student athlete in the university setting, as it was a lifestyle I was very familiar with for all of high-school as well.
What have you most appreciated about being a part of UFV?
I appreciate the small, intimate setting of UFV classrooms and campus.
In one sentence, what is the most important piece of advice you have for students of UFV?
Aim to forever be passionate about what you invest your time in.
And finally, where are you going from here?
I have one more year of school to complete my BSc (Bio major and KPE minor), which I will eventually put towards Naturopathy school application in the next few years. In the mean time, I plan to travel the world to see as much as possible and volunteer myself either in the field of natural healing or just help make positive change wherever there is a need.
