Having finally won the attention of the Juno awards, Neil Young has got the respect he deserves from the Canadian music industry. Of course, he has always had the hearts and respect of his fellow musicians.
Radiohead – “Tell Me Why”
Listening to Thom Yorke and the boys play this country-themed song is enough reason to watch the fan recorded video. Of course, the deep lyrics planted in a simple folk tune reveal why Young was such an influence on Radiohead’s own distinct style of music.
Nick Cave – “Helpless”
The classic Neil Young tune is revised here with a surprisingly slick set of production values. Yet it is Cave’s rusty sounding voice that carries the tune and makes something special out of an al-ready wonderful song.
The Pixies – “Winterlong”
The cover of the early Neil Young track “Winterlong” is al-most surreal in the hands of the Pixies with a growling guitar that sounds eerie accompanying the fifties-date-night approach to the chorus.
The Flaming Lips – “After the Goldrush”
A song that was already lyri-cally “out there” gets an even trip-pier makeover by the band that is known for doing just that. The Lips are nothing if not creative with their take on this classic, right from the opening drum solo.
