The semester may be winding down, but here at Chilliwack Campus Centre things are just heating up! From politics to parties, University of the Fraser Valley Student Life is presenting a number of exciting events to distract you from the stress of your final papers and exams.
Your last chance to help shape the clay for the Empty Bowls project was held at a drop-in session last week. Those artists will be able to decorate their bowls on Wednesday, April 13 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Campus Centre. The Empty Bowls project is an annual initiative at UFV. The process is simple: students, staff, and administration come together to mold clay into handcrafted bowls. Student Life’s Martin Kelly then fires the bowls in the kiln and participants then get to decorate those bowls. On Thursday, April 21, Student Life will host an Empty Bowls community dinner at U-house. Choose one of the unique bowls, enjoy the soup and buns meal, and take home the bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. Your donation at the community dinner will be given to the Abbotsford Food Bank, an organization that supports many of the hungry students on campus.
School is almost out for the summer and Student Life in Chilliwack is throwing a Summertime – Hawaiian Mocktails Party to celebrate. Join us between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13 at Campus Centre for Martin’s marvelous mocktails, tropical tunes, and festive food. The best part is that it’s free!
Think you’re the UFV Wii sports champion? Let the games begin! Our Weekend Wii Tournament will be held Friday night, April 15, at Campus Centre. You must register with desmond.devnich@ufv.ca ahead of time and bring $5.00 to cover the cost of snacks, drinks, and a pancake breakfast. Be sure to bring pillows, blankets, and a competitive attitude. We’ll have six couches, plenty of food, music, and the big projector screens for all your gaming needs.
UFV’s very own Darren Blakeborough will be acting as the superintendent in an outstanding production of The Drowsy Chaperone at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre this month. Set in the decadent world of the 1920’s, this Broadway musical is sure to get many laughs. Tickets are available at www.chilliwackculturalcentre.ca or 604-391-SHOW.
Your Member of Parliament candidates of Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon go head to head on Tuesday, April 19 when UFV Student Life hosts its federal election debate in the Chilliwack theatre. Discussion will be student-focused, including hot topics like post-secondary education, transportation, and environmental sustainability. Questions should be submitted by Friday, April 15 to desmond.devnich@ufv.ca, via Twitter @UFVstudentlife or over the phone at 604-792-0025 extension 2509. There will be an index card provided to each attendee for pressing questions to be written on and passed to the moderator during the evening. UFV Student Life has invited all candidates to mingle with their constituents following the debate while refreshments are served. You have a voice – use it! Diane Janzen, Mark Strahl, Jamie Hoskins, Gwen O’ Mahony, Clive Edwards, and Dorothy Jean O’Donnell will all be in attendance.
