Sept. 11 was the final day for nominations for local municipal elections in Abbotsford. Four candidates are running for mayor, 22 candidates for the eight council seats, and 20 candidates for the seven seats on the Board of Education. Running for mayor are Sukhi Dhami, Paul Mahil, David Pellikaan, and current Mayor Ross Siemens.
Currently, four all-candidate meetings are scheduled for October, starting with the District Parent Advisory Council hosting nominees for the school board on Oct. 1 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Sport Abbotsford will host council and mayor candidates on Oct. 3. Food security will be discussed by mayor and council hopefuls on Oct. 5 in an All Candidates meeting hosted by the Archway Food Justice Program. Finally, the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce will hold a “Council Candidate Mingle & Mayoral Debate” on Oct. 7 from 5:00-7:00 p.m.
The campaign period began Sept. 19, and advanced voting days are on Oct. 7, 10, and 11. Students living away from home may vote in only one local election, choosing between their home city or their current location. Mail ballot applications are being accepted for those unable to vote in person until Oct. 6 and general voting will occur on Oct. 17.
