CIVL Station Manager Aaron Levy recognizes this is the time to talk about gun violence (as if it wasn’t before). Here are four songs from artists in America who likely have a lot more exposure to said societal ill than he has. He lets them speak for themselves here for the most part.

Run the Jewels Pew Pew Pew

“You’re looking at the guy who the guy that you think that / I got my style from got his own style from, sup?” What a curious line! Of course, El-P, or Jamie, as he’s known to probably no one, is certainly that guy, who gave your heroes style.

Dead Prez W4

“I been workin’ all my life but ain’t got nothin’ to show / I ain’t tellin’ you nothin’ you don’t already know / I been working all my life but ain’t got nothin’ to show / like this world just don’t want us to grow / … Click clack, gimme my s**t back.”

Kendrick Lamar   Money Trees

“Pick your poison, tell me what you do / everybody gonna respect the shooter / but the one in front of the gun lives forever / I’ve been hustling all day, this’a way, that’a way / through canals and alleyways just to say / money trees is the perfect place for shade, that’s just how I feel.”

Immortal Technique ft. Brother Ali, Killer Mike, and Chuck D Civil Wars

“Civil war for the soul of a nation / this is a struggle to save civilization / demonstrations overthrowing the occupation / the annihilation of mental colonization / Civil war for the soul of a nation / we fight for the future of our civilization / destroy the corrupt government organizations / trying to survive cultural assassination.”
