Large-scale air attack on Kyiv in wake of peace talks

On Dec. 27, 2025 a Russian attack on Kyiv, the capital city of Ukraine, occurred using over 500 drones and at least 40 missiles. This attack killed two people and injured over 30. They mainly targeted energy infrastructure that cut off heat for at least a third of the population, during a time where temperatures are normally at zero degrees Celsius.

This strike occurred the day before another set of peace talks were scheduled between the U.S. President Donald Trump, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Florida. On the same day of the attacks, Canada promised Ukraine an extra 2.5 billion dollars in economic aid, in tandem with European affirmations of support.

As a condition for ceasefire, Russia has demanded that Ukrainian troops retreat from the Donetsk region while Kyiv wants fighting to stop immediately. The United States has attempted to find a middle ground, suggesting that a free economic zone could be established in Donetsk if Ukraine relinquished parts of it to Russia.

However, attacks such as those on Kyiv have overshadowed the recent peace talks with President Zelensky declaring that Russian missiles speak far louder.
