New Select and Collect service allows students to borrow UFV Library materials

The UFV Library announced last month the creation of a new “Select and Collect” service, in order to continue offering access to its collection during the pandemic. The service allows students, employees, and alumni to reserve and pick up books using the UFV Library catalogue, providing an alternative to browsing in person while the libraries are closed to the public

According to the library website, students, staff, and alumni can place a hold on items through the UFV Library catalogue. Users will then be emailed when the material is available for pickup at the Abbotsford library and asked to provide their campus card upon arrival. Library items can be returned to both the Abbotsford and Chilliwack library book drops.

Library items are placed in quarantine for seven days once they are returned in compliance with COVID-19 procedures. There are also many items available in an online format, which can be accessed via the catalogue.

According to the Select and Collect webpage, available items include books from Abbotsford Stacks, books from the English language learning collection, and curriculum collection items for those in the teacher education program. It does not include DVDs, course reserves, reference materials, and periodicals. Speaking with The Cascade via email, Brenda Philip, circulation and data services librarian, said she anticipates a “separate scanning/emailing service for items from [the library’s] periodicals and reference collection” in the coming months, but details are still being worked out.

At this time, Select and Collect is only available at the Abbotsford campus Monday through Thursday between noon and 4 p.m. According to Philip, the library hopes to extend the service to Chilliwack by October.

More details about Select and Collect can be found on the UFV Library website. covid-19
