This upcoming season is shaping up to be a thrilling one for the UFV Cascades. After making the Canada West playoffs last year and finishing with a 14-8 overall record and 13-7 in conference play, the team returns with a mix of experienced players and talented newcomers who are ready to make an impact.

UFV returns with a strong veteran core, the Cascades also welcome a talented recruiting class.  Ismael Hernandez, a 6’7” guard/forward from Spain, brings his size and versatility, averaging 12.4 points per game. Bennett O’Connor, who transferred from Skagit Valley College, averaged a team high of 15.4 points per game last season. The newcomers should make an immediate impact on the team, including transfer forward Ben Pearson arriving from MacEvan. Guard Jovin Sunner joins the Cascades adding another skilled player and backcourt option. Together the new players add size, depth and competitiveness as the team looks to build on last season

Before the regular season even begins, fans will get an early look at the team during the summer exhibition games. The Cascades will host several National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division one opponents, including the teams of Washington State University, Idaho State University, Marquette University and the University of Oregon, while also taking on Purdue University at Capilano University. These exhibition games are a great opportunity for the players to test themselves and build chemistry before Canada West play begins.

Head Coach Joe Enevoldson returns for another season with the team looking to build on last year’s success. The coaching staff brought in talented players from across Canada, the U.S., and Europe, giving the team more depth while returning players continue to develop. The Cascades are aiming to compete with the top teams in Canada West and make a deeper playoff run.

One of the things new students coming to UFV can potentially look forward to is becoming part of the Cascades sports community. University does not mean attending classes only — it’s also about meeting new people, creating memories, and becoming part of something bigger by joining a community. For any alumni looking into sport related activities and ecosystems, supporting the men’s basketball team can be a great way of experiencing the Cascades culture.

With an experienced coaching staff, a new group of players, and another competitive season ahead, the future looks bright for the UFV Cascades. For any basketball fans or simply for students looking for a fun way to get involved on campus, come out to a game this season and support the team! Upcoming Cascades matches hosted at UFV Athletic Centre include July 18 against Washington State University, July 30 against Idaho State University, Aug. 1 against Marquette University, Aug. 8 against the University of Oregon, and Sep. 3 against Portland State University. Additionally, the Cascades will be playing against Purdue University at Capilano University on July 29.

Go Cascades!
