Canada’s increasing need for food banks

Food banks are pillars of support for Canadian communities, providing much needed support for food insecure Canadians.

CTV News reported that in every 10 people living in Toronto, one person is utilizing their service. Daily Bread Food Bank CEO, Neil Hetherington emphasized that there is no need for Canadians to be in this position, but expressed that due to economic shifts, more Canadians rely on food bank services.

“In a country as wonderful as ours is, that just shouldn’t be the case.”

This concern continues to grow as there has been talk of food prices rising by four to six per cent in the new year. Hetherington spoke about the importance of food banks, but lasting solutions need to be implemented by the government to ensure that citizens achieve food security.

“The long term solution is decent affordable housing, income supports that allow people to thrive in community and a work environment for Ontarians so that they can live.”

The average Canadian can help by donating non-perishables and money to local food banks and Hetherington urged those able to donate, to do so all year-round.
