Canada could become the first Associate Member in partnership with the EU

On Wed. Sept 16, on behalf of the European Union, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen made a proposal for Canada to become their first of 27 associate members, while little is known in terms of roles specifics, the intent behind the proposal focuses on strengthening the two country’s security and economic relationship. On Sept. 17, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney made a speech to the European Parliament that supported and encouraged this relationship. Carney specifically focused on collaborating with the European Union on core industries that include defence and artificial intelligence. He had a positive outlook on this deeper partnership with the EU, and he pointed out the importance of maintaining Canada’s ability to self-govern as a nation.

“This is about sovereignty, our ability to live as we wish. We do not seek power to dominate others.”

President Donald Trump was not thrilled by this news, seeing it as a “hostile act” if Canada goes through with this partnership, reported Kelly Geraldine Malone for Global News. Trump threatened high tariffs on the EU should the partnership come to fruition. More updates on this story will come as events unfold.
