By Alicia Williams (CIVL DJ) – Email

Print Edition: May 23, 2012

Alicia is a silly programmer at CIVL Radio. She hosts two shows: Mood Swings and GRLGRMS. On both of these shows, she can’t play songs with swearing because they are too early. This means she can’t play any songs from her favourite punk album of all time: Dayglo Abortions’ Feed Us a Fetus. Here are some of her favourite songs from this album.

“Proud to be a Canadian”

A tongue-in-cheek song about being proud to be from Canada.  This song exemplifies the problems in the Canadian government in 1986. This whole album is like a time warp back to political issues during the time of its release, but maybe, some issues are still standing today. “Pass me another welfare cheque.”

“Ronald McRaygun”

Was Dayglo the first band to say McAnything? This song is about Ronald Reagan and his seeming love of war and consumerism, the focus of many a punk song during the 1980s.  If you pretend the Dead Kennedy’s never existed, this is probably the best political punk song of the time.

“Dog Farts”

This is an icky punk song about feeding your dog cheese and then he farts and has to poop.  Gross hey? I hated Dayglo Abortions for so long after seeing the album cover of Two Dogs Fucking, I just thought they were gross, not funny gross, but like, that kid in elementary school who always had boogers running out of his nose gross.  Gross.

“Black Sabbath”

This song is amazing. Probably one of the very best on the album. What’s funny about punk bands sometimes is that you don’t know if they’re being jokesters or they think Black Sabbath is actually number one (like I do … sometimes). Toni Iommi is my god, it’s true, but is it true for the Cretin?
