Brad van Haastregt is the host of Haters Gonna Hate every Tuesday from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., bringing the University of the Fraser Valley the best indie rock from Canada and around the world. Old Mare was a recent guest on the show to discuss their EP You Deserve More.

“Pistols at Dawn” Old Mare

If there was ever a song built to be the theme song of a new- age spaghetti western, this would be it. The lyrics take you through a story which is bound to end in a shoot out at dawn.

“Jealous Heart” Old Mare

The classic story of two people in an overbearing relationship. Our main character comes to the conclusion he is being over protective and he tells his lover “you deserve more,” which happens to be the EP’s title— coincidence? I think not.

“Flood of ’48” Old Mare

Lead singer Chris Janzen, driving around Abbotsford one day, noticed that someone had thrown away an old Red Cross box; after some creative googling, he discovered there was a flood in 1948. “The Red Cross is coming/ emergency supplies/ to help those whose lives/ were overcome by the tide.”

“Waiting” Old Mare

Sitting and waiting at the local Greyhound station for a lover, this song takes a closer look at the conditions that surround it. For some this song is the greatest, and for others it could have been left on the cutting room floor.
