I have a promise to myself to become a polyglot at some point of my life, this is why I began learning Japanese and French a few years ago. French feels convenient because it is similar to Spanish and English, so a lot of elements bear a strong enough resemblance where one can potentially grasp French language concepts sooner if Spanish and English are already known languages. Japanese is wildly different to both Spanish and English, I had to learn new structures, words, and three different “alphabets” to understand it. And yet, I would choose to keep learning Japanese as opposed to French any day of the week.
I think a strong influence for how well you do with a new language comes from the learning journey. I’m convinced that although Japanese was more challenging, it felt good to study it. I’ve struggled to find the same likeness in French. Sometimes I feel that there’s this expectation that French should be easier for me to click with, but in reality, I’ve struggled more with it compared to the former. I just like Japanese more, I’m sorry!
Alas, my self made promise persists. I’ll learn both and become proficient with them, eventually.
