The Cascade Corner Booth (WORKING TITLE)

Everyone and their dog thinks they can start a podcast these days. Lucky for UFV students The Cascade is someone and someone’s dog! So, we’ve delved into the world of audio journalism. Now what? What can students expect from it? We’re here to talk at each other, and in turn, talk to you.

Darien: So Cassie, what do you see the future of our podcast?

Cassie: D! I can’t believe it’s finally here. I see lots more chicken nuggets and laughs, but also can’t wait to bring in more guests and stories and use this as a platform to connect UFV students with the broader community. Why do you feel this is an important step for us?

D: Audio journalism is the future. So many people just exist in the online sphere and don’t bother to pick up a physical copy of a newspaper anymore. And their first instinct when they open their phones is to scroll Instagram or TikTok, not a news app. So we want to ensure that our news is accessible to students and in a format that they are most likely to consume.

C: I agree, I hope this gets people more interested in what’s going on around the world and right here at UFV and in the Fraser Valley. I think shifting from existing solely in the online sphere is the only way to find that sense of community that so many seem to crave here at UFV. Maybe a step closer to finally moving away from the “commuter campus” label. What do you think students can expect from the pod?

D: Well, our first episode was certainly a feral one, I feel like we laughed so much and spoke very candidly about ourselves and our life at the paper and at UFV. Sometimes I wonder if we were too candid, but we are a paper and I value transparency. So they can definitely expect hot takes from us. We’ve really opened the door to all our contributors and contractors so I think it’s going to be a very honest look at our current team and what they are most interested in covering on campus. And then of course, hopefully, some great profiles and stories from campus. Is there anything that you’re worried about when it comes to the podcast?

C: Probably longevity. You know, is this going to die with us when our time at The Cascade ends? So I hope we can get the student body involved and excited about this. Because as you said, it really is an open thing that’s aim is to benefit not just our paper but the UFV community.
