This show was unique right from the moment we handed over our tickets. Staged outside in the theatre department’s loading bay, Getting Even is about revenge and who it really benefits. Director Luke Stevens escorts guests to the seating area set up just in front of a white convertible, staged to look like a car showroom. Funk is already on stage, his feet peeking out from under the car’s open door. The audience is invited to engage in nearly 360 degree theatre as Ellis pops up from behind the bushes to begin the show. The script is clever and fast-paced, while still giving the audience time to invest in each character. As far as lighting and sound go, the outside set does the work for us — with 7:35 p.m. being their latest time slot, Getting Even uses natural light and the sounds of Chilliwack to remind us that we’re at a car lot. For something a little different than the standard in-house show, catch this DFest show — they’ll even give you umbrellas in the rain.

Memorable lines:

“At least the airbags worked.”

“You can go with me to his house and shoot him in his kneecaps.”
